Meta Revamps Avatars with Generative AI, New Customization Options
Meta is giving its metaverse avatars a major overhaul, promising a more expressive and customizable experience for users. The new avatars will be available starting October 1st across Meta’s platforms including Horizon OS, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
The company, which has been steadily improving its avatar technology, is introducing a host of new features with the update. Users will have more granular control over their avatar’s appearance with the ability to fine-tune features like eye size, nose shape, and body proportions. This enhanced customization is powered by an updated avatar skeleton and a new underlying tech stack.
Meta is also embracing the power of generative AI. By typing in a prompt describing the desired look, users will be able to generate avatars in 2025, showcasing a spooky mummy-inspired avatar as an example.
In addition to these new features, Meta is introducing fantastical avatars, allowing users to transform into animals or monsters. The company also plans to offer themed avatars inspired by popular characters like Captain America and celebrities like Doja Cat, which can be unlocked through experiences in Horizon Worlds.
The company is also empowering Horizon Worlds developers with the ability to create AI-powered NPCs starting in 2025. This will allow developers to create more engaging virtual worlds with characters that can interact with users, enhancing the overall experience.
With these updates, Meta aims to make Horizon Worlds a more appealing virtual world. While facing competition from established platforms like Roblox and Fortnite, Meta’s focus on improved avatar technology and the introduction of NPCs could draw more users to Horizon Worlds and create a more captivating virtual experience.
