BJP Denies Sunil Jakhar’s Resignation, Attributes Absence to Travel
The BJP has dismissed reports of Sunil Jakhar’s resignation as Punjab unit president, calling them “fake.” However, party sources indicate that Jakhar has expressed dissatisfaction with his position and a desire to step down, but has agreed to remain until the next election of the state party president, likely in December.
Rumours of Jakhar’s resignation were fueled by his absence from a meeting Thursday to strategize the party’s membership drive. Senior Punjab BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal refuted claims of a boycott, stating that Jakhar was unavailable due to his recent return from a month-long trip abroad. He emphasized that Jakhar had not expressed any intention to resign to Grewal.
Jakhar, who joined the BJP in May 2022 after a long stint with the Congress, is a prominent Hindu figure in the party. He has served as a Lok Sabha MP from Gurdaspur and is a three-time MLA from Abohar. While known for his outspoken nature, he has been facing discontent for some time over the party’s internal affairs.
Despite the denial, Jakhar’s reported dissatisfaction adds to the ongoing tensions within the Punjab BJP. This incident comes just months after the party appointed the former Congress leader as its state unit president in July 2023.
