As UN meets, Haitians express hopelessness at finding an international solution to gang crisis

## Despair in Haiti as UN Summit Fails to Offer Concrete Solutions to Gang Crisis

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI – As the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York, Haitians are grappling with a sense of deepening despair, with the international community seemingly failing to offer concrete solutions to the country’s escalating gang crisis. The ongoing violence, which has paralyzed much of the nation, continues to claim lives and displace thousands, leaving many feeling forgotten and abandoned.

“We are tired of promises, tired of empty words,” said Marie, a resident of Port-au-Prince who has witnessed the brutal realities of gang rule firsthand. “We need action, not meetings.”

Haiti’s Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, pleaded with global leaders at the UN to intervene, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation and the urgent need for a multinational force to confront the armed gangs. However, despite the appeals, no concrete commitments have been made regarding the deployment of such a force.

Concerns over the potential for a repeat of past failed interventions, coupled with the lack of a clear consensus on the best approach, have hampered international efforts to address the crisis. Some observers argue that a robust and well-coordinated intervention is essential to restore order and enable humanitarian aid to reach those in need. However, others caution against a militaristic solution, emphasizing the importance of addressing the underlying social and economic factors that contribute to gang violence.

Meanwhile, ordinary Haitians continue to suffer the consequences of the crisis. Schools are shut, hospitals are struggling to operate, and access to essential services is severely limited. The lack of security has hampered efforts to address the widespread food insecurity and cholera outbreak that are further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The UN summit has once again highlighted the stark reality of Haiti’s plight, leaving many to question whether the international community is truly willing to invest the necessary resources and commitment to help Haiti overcome its challenges. As the world’s leaders convene, Haitian voices remain largely unheard, echoing the deep-seated feeling of abandonment that is fueling a growing sense of hopelessness within the country.
