Islanders’ Tsyplakov Impresses in Debut, Shows Potential

Tsyplakov Makes Encouraging Debut in Islanders’ Preseason Win

Maxim Tsyplakov, a winger who has spent his entire career playing in the KHL, made his first appearance in North America on Sunday, playing in the Islanders’ preseason opener against the Devils. While his first shift saw him turn the puck over on the penalty kill leading directly to a Devils goal, Tsyplakov showed his strength and skill throughout the game, ultimately contributing to the Islanders’ 4-2 victory.

“Little bit harder first shift. First and second shift, I think, I didn’t like because the puck is loose,” Tsyplakov said. “After is much better. [I] understand how to play, I’m good.”

Tsyplakov finished the game with 12:21 of ice time, including time on both the power play and the penalty kill. He showcased his physicality, protecting the puck well and earning praise from his teammates for his tough play.

“He’s got a big body, it’s pretty hard to move him,” said Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov. “He’s got speed and power.”

“Really strong,” added defenseman Noah Dobson. “He’s like an ox out there. He’s thick, he’s big, he knows how to protect his body well. He’s gonna be tough to handle.”

Tsyplakov also impressed with his playmaking ability, dishing a smooth no-look assist on Julien Gauthier’s second-period goal.

“I know my plan,” Tsyplakov said of the assist. “I need to look like shoot and the D believed me. I can pass.”

While it’s still early, Tsyplakov’s performance suggests he could be a valuable addition to the Islanders’ lineup, adding net-front presence and physicality. His versatility, including his ability to play on both special teams, makes him even more intriguing.

Tsyplakov, who signed a one-year, $950,000 contract with the Islanders this summer, has already started learning English, demonstrating his commitment to making a long-term home in North America.

“Gives me a big chance,” he said during rookie camp. “I want to play hockey in big leagues. And I want [to be] working with Patrick.”

The Islanders will be hoping Tsyplakov can continue his strong start and become a key contributor to their success in the upcoming season.
